The headline achievement is hard to ignore. Back in December 2023, Vaguely Royal won a Class 2 race at Wolverhampton — one of the top levels of competition you will find outside the very biggest occasions in Britain. For a horse who spends most of its time in Class 4 company, that was a genuine statement. The trouble is that since winning at Wincanton in October 2024, now nineteen months ago, Vaguely Royal has gone six races without adding to the tally. The recent form reads 6-3-3-3-9-6, which tells its own story: regularly thereabouts, occasionally disappearing, but not quite delivering.

Across 33 races in total, Vaguely Royal has won 4 times and placed on 14 other occasions — so it has finished in the first three in more than half its races. That is a 12% win rate, roughly 1 win in every 8 races, which is modest, but the 14 places suggest a horse that competes honestly and rarely has a completely off day. The career earnings of those performances point to a horse operating at a respectable level without quite threatening the top tier consistently.

The distance question is where Vaguely Royal gets interesting. Over the longer trips — between a mile and six furlongs and two miles — the record sharpens noticeably: 3 wins from 11 races, which is 27%, or better than 1 in every 4. That is a meaningful difference from its overall profile, and it suggests a horse that genuinely needs time and space to show what it can do. On normal ground, it has won 2 from 11 at 18%, and the first win of the whole career came at Doncaster in June 2023, setting the template for what followed.

Jockey Kieran Shoemark has been the most successful partner, winning 2 of their 8 races together — that is 25%, or 1 in 4, which is a solid combination by any measure. Ian Williams has had a productive season with 96 winners from the yard, so the infrastructure is clearly working. Whether Vaguely Royal can end that nineteen-month drought is the question worth watching.
