The overall numbers are modest: one win from thirteen races, a win rate of around 1 in 13. But zoom in on its best distance range — seven furlongs to a mile — and the picture improves a little. At that trip it has won 1 from 7, which works out at roughly 14%, or about 1 in every 7 races. That is still not a high conversion rate, but it does suggest the horse is at least competitive when conditions suit it. Chester, where it finally got off the mark, is one of the quirkiest tracks in the country — tight, left-handed, and almost circular — so winning there does require a certain adaptability.

At Class 5 level, which is where it has done most of its racing, it has won 1 from 5, or 1 in 5 races at that grade. Class 5 sits towards the lower end of the racing ladder, so this is not a horse troubling the big occasions — but within its own sphere it clearly has winning ability, even if it does not always show it. The recent form of three-three-two-seven-seven-three suggests a horse that went through a rough patch mid-season but has come back to finding the podium positions regularly.

Craig Lidster trains the horse from Norton in North Yorkshire, and his yard has been in solid form this season with 20 winners sent out. That is a healthy tally for a stable of that size and region, and it suggests Ubetterseethis is in capable hands. With the horse having raced as recently as yesterday and still only three years old, there is plenty of time for another win to come along — the question is whether it can turn those consistent placed efforts into something more decisive.
