The recent form makes for mixed reading. A third-place finish is the brightest result in the last six runs, but that has been sandwiched around a string of mid-field finishes — a seventh, a seventh, a sixth, and a fourth — suggesting a horse that turns up but struggles to land a telling blow when it matters. The fact it raced just one day ago means its the yard are keeping it busy, which at least tells you the yard believes it is in decent enough shape to keep running.
Twilight Safari is based at Middleham in North Yorkshire with trainer Micky Hammond, a yard that has sent out 24 winners already this season — so there is no shortage of know-how around the horse. Hammond's team clearly knows how to get horses winning, which makes Twilight Safari something of a project that has not yet come together. It has run four times at Class 5 level — the entry point of British racing, where horses of this type are expected to be competitive — and drawn a blank in all four. That is the level where you would expect the best chance of a breakthrough, and it has not come yet.
Whether a change of tactics, a different track, or simply a bit more time is the answer remains to be seen. What is clear is that Twilight Safari is an active, busy racehorse with a patient team behind it, still hunting for that first winner's enclosure moment.
