Torneo

The partnership between Torneo and jockey Gavin Sheehan has been the making of him. Together they have won four races from fourteen outings—a 29% win rate, well above the horse's overall average. Sheehan knows how to ride him, knows when to push and when to be patient, and after their win at Wetherby earlier this year, the jockey described Torneo as "a fine, big horse with a lovely attitude" and noted his jumping was still raw, suggesting there is untapped potential in there yet. Trainer Jamie Snowden, based at Lambourn, has built a successful stable this season with eighty-two winners, and he has clearly found the right formula for Torneo: the horse thrives on normal ground, winning two of three races when conditions are standard, and he is a specialist at Chepstow, where he has won two of three runs.

Torneo typically races at Class 4 level, where he has won three of ten races, and earlier in the season he benefited from the weight-for-age allowance available to younger horses. That advantage has now expired, yet he continues to win without it. Snowden recently reflected that Torneo "stepped up" significantly when switching to novice handicap chasing and that there remains "plenty more to come"—high praise from a trainer who does not speak lightly. For a horse still learning, still raw in top-3 finishes, with a jockey who understands him and a trainer who believes in him, Torneo has already proved he belongs in the conversation. The question now is how far that belief can take him.
