Toca Madera

The pattern of Toca Madera's career tells an interesting story. It has never won in eleven attempts at the highest Class 2 level, which is telling — this is a horse that operates effectively at lower grades but struggles when the standard rises. Its recent six races show a mix of mediocrity and sharp form: an eighth place, a win, a top-3 finish, then a poor twelfth, followed by another second place and a sixteenth. That inconsistency is typical of a horse that punches hard on its day but cannot be relied upon week in and week out.

Interestingly, Tommie Jakes, Toca Madera's most frequent rider, has yet to win aboard the horse despite five rides together. A change of jockey might sometimes find a better rhythm, or it may simply reflect that Jakes has been aboard during tougher assignments. What matters now is that O'Meara's yard at Upper Helmsley, which has sent out 101 winners this season, keeps Toca Madera active and pointed toward the races where it competes best — away from the elite level and on courses where it has already proven it can win.
