Grant Tuer's yard at Birkby in North Yorkshire has been sending out plenty of winners this season, which speaks well for the stable's overall form, yet Titainium remains one of the tougher nuts to crack. A pattern does emerge in the numbers, though. On fast, dry ground — the kind of surface that suits many horses — Titainium wins roughly 1 in every 3 races, a win rate that jumps from its overall average. It also prefers the middle distances of around a mile and three to four furlongs, winning 2 of 8 races at that trip. Oliver Stammers, the jockey most often in the saddle, hasn't found the answer yet, with a blank record of 0 wins from seven outings together. The horse typically runs in Class 5 company, the sort of bread-and-butter racing where any nose ahead of a rival counts for plenty. Titainium has won twice from 12 races at that level, just under one win in every six attempts.
The dry ground preference and the distance sweet spot are the real clues here. Ground conditions matter enormously in racing, and when the track plays fast and firm, Titainium suddenly looks a different proposition. Finding a race on firm ground at the right trip could be the key to breaking that 14-month drought.
