Thunder Run

Trainer K. R. Burke, based in Coverham, North Yorkshire, has always believed Thunder Run will develop into something special—a Group horse capable of competing at the highest level. The breakthrough came at York, where the step up in trip proved crucial. Thunder Run loves normal, standard ground conditions (winning two of five races on that surface, a 40 per cent win rate) and performs best over distances between seven furlongs and a mile, winning half his races over that range. At York specifically, he has won twice in seven attempts. Burke's instructions to his jockey on that May victory were emphatic: do not go out and make the running. But Thunder Run had other ideas, jumping out sharply and seizing the lead with a boldness that nearly undid him. Coming home, he had burned so much fuel early on that he was struggling in the final hundred yards—"on fresh air" as Burke put it—and only his courage got him over the line. That recklessness cost him dearly later, but it also revealed something valuable: once Thunder Run learns to settle and race with economy rather than brute force, he will be ready for Listed or Group races.

He remains a work in progress, still very much raw and unpredictable. But the trajectory is unmistakable. With Clifford Lee aboard and Burke's steady hand in the yard, Thunder Run looks primed for a significant step up in class.
