This Guy

The recent form tells a mixed story. Of the last six races, there are two blank entries where the horse either didn't finish or the result wasn't recorded, but either side of those gaps sits some respectable placing — a third, a fifth, and two further finishes of fourth and eighth. It raced just yesterday, so this is a horse very much in the thick of a busy campaign. The question is whether all that activity is building toward something or simply confirming a pattern.

At Class 5 level, which is the entry-level tier of competitive racing, This Guy has had three chances and taken none of them. Even at this standard — the level where many horses pick up their first wins — it has drawn a blank. That is a gentle concern. Horses that struggle to win at the lower levels of the sport sometimes find their niche with a change of conditions or distance, but the record so far offers no obvious clues about what might unlock a victory.

The trainer, Daniel James Murphy, operates out of Curragh in County Kildare — the heartland of Irish racing — and has sent out 19 winners already this season, which shows the yard clearly knows how to get a horse to win. That experience makes the continued wait for a first win with This Guy all the more curious. With a capable trainer behind it and more than enough racing miles in the legs, this horse has had every opportunity. Whether it eventually converts one of those eight near-misses into something to celebrate remains the story still to be written.
