The Real Whacker

The ten-year-old is trained by Patrick Neville at Coverham in North Yorkshire, a yard that has sent out 28 winners this season alone. The horse made his mark quickly once the penny dropped — his first win came at Carlisle in December 2021, and within the next 14 months he had won three times at Cheltenham, including two Class 1 races in the space of ten weeks. Cheltenham is clearly his place: three wins from nine visits there is a remarkable record at the most demanding track in jump racing, where even good horses can go years without winning.

The other essential ingredient is the ground. On wet or muddy ground, The Real Whacker has won three times from just six races — half his starts in those conditions have ended in the winner's enclosure. Neville has been candid about it: bad luck with the weather cost the horse run after run, and the frustration of watching the forecast turn against them became a recurring theme. When the ground finally came right at Wetherby in November 2024 — his most recent win, now 19 months ago — Neville described it plainly: "The ground is the key to him." That Charlie Hall win was also a Class 1, and the trainer's ambitions remain firmly at the top of the sport. The King George at Kempton, the Cotswold Chase, and ultimately the Cheltenham Gold Cup are the targets he has spoken about. At Kempton, Neville noted that Cheltenham "is a place that he likes" and suggested they might go straight to the Gold Cup.

His regular jockey Sam Twiston-Davies has ridden him in eight of his 22 races, winning two of them — a win rate of 25%, or roughly 1 in every 4 rides together. The most recent of those was the Wetherby win, though the pair were denied what could have been a significant run in the Kerry National when The Real Whacker unseated Twiston-Davies after hitting a fence.

Six races without a win since Wetherby, and a horse now into his tenth year. But three Cheltenham wins, a preference for the sort of heavy ground that arrives reliably in a British winter, and a trainer who backed his judgment when others were writing the horse off — there is still a case to be made that the best days are not entirely behind him.
