The Coffee Pod

The bigger of those two York wins came on 10 September 2023, when the horse won a Class 2 race — one of the top races in Britain — which remains the highlight of its career. That is no small thing. The vast majority of horses at this level never get near a Class 2 win, and to land one at a prestige track like York gives this horse a legitimate claim to a place in the memory. It was also the first win of the career, which means The Coffee Pod announced itself on the biggest occasion it had faced.

Away from York, though, the picture is much flatter. Most of its races have been at Class 4 level, and it has won just 1 of those 13 races — roughly 1 in 13, or about 8%. That gap between what it does at York and what it does elsewhere is the central puzzle of this horse. The most recent win came back at York in July 2024, now 24 months ago, and since then it has gone six races without adding to the tally, with finishes of third, a gap, sixth, eighth, eighth, and seventh in its last six outings.

The yard behind this horse is William Muir and Chris Grassick, based in Lambourn, and they have had a productive season with 20 winners sent out. Regular jockey Sean Levey has ridden the horse five times without a win between them, though that partly reflects the broader dry spell rather than a specific partnership concern. The Coffee Pod raced just one day ago, so it is very much in active training and the team clearly believe there is more to come. The question is whether a return to York — the one place this horse has ever really shone — can revive things.
