The Coffee Pod

York is one of British racing's great venues, and The Coffee Pod has clearly taken to it. In five races there, it has won twice — a record that stands out sharply against everything else on its CV. Most horses find a circuit that suits them; fewer find a top-level track to call their own. The first of those wins, in September 2023, was also the horse's first career victory, and it arrived in a Class 2 race — one of the better races in the country. For a horse that spends most of its working life in Class 4 company, where it has won just 1 from 13 races (roughly 1 in every 13), that win was a genuine step up. The second York victory followed in July 2024.

Since then, though, The Coffee Pod hasn't been back to the winner's enclosure. It last won 21 months ago, and across its last six races the form reads 8-8-6-3-6, with no finish better than third. That kind of run would test the patience of any team, and the partnership with jockey Sean Levey hasn't unlocked anything either — in five races together, they are still waiting for a first win. Racing can be a grind like that.

The yard behind the horse, William Muir and Chris Grassick's operation based in Lambourn, is in solid nick this season with 21 winners already sent out, so it's not as though The Coffee Pod is sitting in a struggling stable waiting for things to improve. It raced just yesterday, which means it is very much a live, active competitor. Whether a return to York — the one track where everything seems to click — is enough to turn things around is the real question. The evidence says it might be the only answer.
