Where Tamarind Bay truly excels is on normal ground conditions. On fast, dry ground he wins roughly three times every ten races—a 30% win rate that stands out sharply against his overall 14% record. Take him off firm ground and he becomes a different proposition, which makes the timing of races and track conditions crucial to understanding when he is likely to run well. His trainer, Mickey Bowen, runs a prolific yard based at Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire that has already sent out 52 winners this season, so there is clearly good horsemanship at work.

The puzzle is what happens in the higher-class races. Tamarind Bay has contested 13 Class 4 races—the kinds of events that sit in the middle of the racing ladder—and has won none of them. This suggests he may have found his level in lower-grade competition, where those recent wins have come. Interestingly, Bowen has spoken about Tamarind Bay moving into chasing later in the year, believing the horse jumps fences particularly well and will show genuine improvement over a bigger obstacle. If that vision comes to pass, we might see a rather different horse in the summer months. For now, though, he remains a horse that loves the right ground and the right company, winning roughly one race in every seven overall, with a recent trend that is genuinely encouraging.
