Tailorman

The career has had two clear highlights. The first win came at Ripon in August 2024, and the second at Chester in June 2025 — Chester being one of the quirkiest, tightest racecourses in Britain, a circuit that suits particular types of horse and often catches others out completely. The fact that Tailorman has won there suggests it handles unusual tracks well, which is a useful weapon to have. What is harder to explain is the gap that has followed: Tailorman has not raced for roughly six months, and that absence is the biggest question mark hanging over today's return.

The recent form before that break is a mixed picture. Reading those last six results from most recent back — 4th, 6th, 5th, 1st, 2nd, 7th — you can see a horse that won and then immediately went backwards, which is the sort of pattern that leaves trainers scratching their heads. The win sandwiched between a second place and then a cluster of mid-pack finishes suggests Tailorman can produce its best on the right day without being consistently reliable enough to predict.

Ian Williams, who trains Tailorman from his yard in Alvechurch, Worcestershire, has had a strong season — 92 winners sent out, which is a serious operation by any measure. A trainer with that kind of throughput tends to know when a horse is ready to run, so the fact that Tailorman is returning now is worth noting. Ryan Kavanagh, who has partnered the horse nine times and won once together (that is 1 from 9, or 11%), keeps the ride. Their record together is modest, but Kavanagh clearly knows this horse well by now.

The level Tailorman usually competes at — Class 4, which sits comfortably in the middle of the racing pecking order — has produced zero wins from 11 attempts. All three career victories have come elsewhere. That oddity is perhaps the most interesting thing about this horse: it has never quite found its groove in the races it runs most often.
