At the shorter end of the stamina test, between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, the record is even more striking: 3 wins from just 4 races, 75%. That combination — soft ground, right trip — seems to be the formula the team at Paul Nicholls' yard in Ditcheat would be looking for every time they plan a run.

Nicholls himself is one of the most successful trainers in the country, and this season his yard has sent out 92 winners — a volume that speaks to serious organisation and a deep bench of talent. Among the jockeys, Harry Cobden has the best relationship with Tahmuras on paper: 4 wins from 10 rides together, which works out to 40% — roughly 2 in every 5 races they've run as a pair. That's a meaningful number, well above the horse's overall average.

The tougher truth is that Tahmuras hasn't won since Aintree on 26 December 2023 — now 28 months ago — and has gone 6 races without a victory since then, finishing second once in that run. At nine years old, with Class 1 races as the regular target, that's not unusual; the standard is brutal and margins are small. The question isn't whether this horse has the ability — those two top-level wins answer that. The question is whether the right combination of conditions, distance, and day comes together again.
