The recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. In the last six races, the best result was a second-place finish, but that has been surrounded by a string of mid-pack and near-the-back efforts — including a seventh, an eighth, and another seventh. There is no obvious upward curve here, no sense that a breakthrough is quietly building. The second place shows the ability is somewhere inside this horse; the question is whether it can be unlocked consistently enough to turn that into an actual win.
What adds a layer of interest is that Superficial raced just yesterday, making this one of the more active horses in training right now. Running frequently can sometimes be a sign that a yard is searching for the right opportunity — the right race, the right conditions — to finally get a horse off the mark. Andrew McNamara, who trains out of Athboy in County Meath, has sent out seven winners already this season, so the operation clearly knows how to win races. The fact that Superficial has not yet contributed to that tally is not for lack of trying.
For now, Superficial sits in the frustrating middle ground that many racehorses occupy — talented enough to place, not quite sharp enough to win. Whether that changes soon is the only question worth asking.
