Sunday Sovereign

The heart of his story is a long drought. His last victory came at The Curragh in October 2023, over two years ago now. Since then, he has not won a race, though he has placed in ten of his subsequent outings — the kind of consistent minor success that keeps a horse in work but cannot mask the fundamental reality that wins have dried up. His recent form shows the scatter of results typical of an older horse looking for that elusive breakthrough: fourth, eighth, third, eleventh, and eighteenth in his last handful of runs.

Trainer G A Kingston has found his best form over shorter distances, specifically between seven furlongs and a mile, where he has won once in eight attempts. It is a narrow window, and within that window Kingston notes he goes well when the ground has some give to it. The trainer has also observed that at top-level Class 2 races — the cream of British and Irish racing — the horse simply does not win: zero victories from eleven attempts at that level. This matters. It suggests Sunday Sovereign is a horse for smaller occasions, and perhaps increasingly, smaller still as the years accumulate. The regular rider Chris Hayes has never managed to get him to the line first, going zero from nine rides together.

What keeps Sunday Sovereign running is the glimmer of his two wins, proof that on his day he can get the job done. Whether those days will come again, with no victory in 35 months, is becoming the question that matters most.
