Strike

The real story with Strike is what he does on fast, dry ground. On those surfaces, he is a different proposition entirely — winning 5 of his 16 races there, a rate of nearly 1 in 3. Put him on wet or muddy ground and he becomes a very different horse, which explains why last Saturday's run at Newmarket, where the ground had been watered, ended in midfield. He had actually won that same race before, but the renewal was strong and conditions were against him. At his age and with his handicap mark drifting downward, these kinds of races are increasingly difficult to win. His trainer, Jonathan Portman, describes him simply as "a dear friend of the yard" — and that matters. Horses like Strike, who stay sound and willing year after year, are treasured precisely because they show up and give their best every time.

Newbury has been his happiest hunting ground, with 2 wins from 6 races there, and he won most recently on that track two months ago in July. Rob Hornby, his most regular rider, has won twice aboard him from 22 races together. There is nothing flashy about any of this, but there is something to admire in a horse who, at eight, is still competitive enough to be considered for a race at Windsor. Strike may never win a top-level prize, but he represents something often overlooked in racing — the working horse, the genuine campaigner, the one who comes back, race after race, asking for nothing but decent conditions and a fair chance.
