Stormy Music

The shape of recent form is encouraging. After a long gap from that August victory, Stormy Music came back and ran three second-place finishes in a row — a run of consistency that shows the horse is finally settling into a pattern. The last three races have been tougher, with a fourth place and two tailed-off efforts, but that is not unusual for a young horse finding its way through the grades. What stands out is the distance sweet spot. At around a mile to a mile and a quarter, the horse wins one race in every three it contests — a win rate of 33 percent over that trip, compared to just 14 percent overall. This is the kind of detail that matters: Stormy Music clearly prefers being stretched a little, and races falling short of that distance or pushing beyond it have yielded only places and minor efforts so far.

Trained by Andrew Balding at the renowned Kingsclere yard in Hampshire, where the stable has already sent out 202 winners this season, Stormy Music has every chance to climb the ladder. The horse is still learning, and at three years old there is time for it to develop into something more consistent. Having raced just a day ago, it remains actively campaigned, and if the yard can keep it stepping up in the right way while capitalizing on that mile-to-mile-and-a-quarter distance, there could be more winning days ahead.
