The path here wasn't entirely straightforward. After a first career win at Chelmsford in June 2023, it was the racing manager to owners Jim and Fitri Hay, Alex Cole, who suggested pointing the horse at better races than seemed obvious at the time — the Sirenia Stakes and then the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Trainer Ralph Beckett has been candid that those ideas came from Cole, not him, and that Starlust wouldn't have gone near those races on his own thinking. That's an unusual thing for a trainer to admit, and it says something worth noting: sometimes the best thing in horse racing is someone asking "why not?"

The most recent high point was a Class 1 win at York in July 2024. Since then, the form has been patchier — a third, a sixth, and a thirteenth across the last few runs — and the horse hasn't raced in roughly ten months. That kind of break at this stage of a career always raises questions. But it's also worth remembering that Beckett's yard has sent out 109 winners this season alone, so whatever preparation has gone into this return, it's coming from an operation that clearly knows what it's doing.

One thing that jumps out from the record is how well Starlust handles wet or soft ground — two wins from four races on those conditions, a 50% hit rate. For context, that compares to 22% at the top level overall, which is respectable but not dominant. Give this horse a damp day at York and the numbers start looking considerably more interesting. Jockey Rossa Ryan has been in the saddle for eight of the 18 races but has only won once together, so the partnership hasn't quite clicked yet. Whether that changes on the return will be worth watching.
