Spycatcher

The most remarkable thread running through his career is what wet ground does to him. Burke has been refreshingly honest about it: on a normal surface, Spycatcher is a solid Group 3 performer. But when conditions turn genuinely wet and muddy, something shifts. "He absolutely ploughs through it," Burke said after one of his Doncaster wins, adding that on that kind of ground, "he's a Group 1 horse." That is a trainer talking about his own horse reaching the very peak of European racing — the equivalent of saying a footballer only plays like a world-beater when it rains, but when it does, he genuinely does.

Doncaster has become his personal hunting ground. He has won there twice from just four visits — that is half his races at the track converted into victories — and both wins came in Class 1 races, in March and November 2025. Burke described the November win as the team rolling the dice: the plan had been to put him away for the season, but the ground came up perfectly and the horse was bouncing out of his previous run, so they let him take his chance. It paid off brilliantly. Jockey James Sullivan was told to look after the horse first and worry about winning second — and still came home in front.

His most regular partner is Clifford Lee, who has ridden him in 15 of his 27 races and won twice together, a ratio of roughly 1 in every 7 or 8 rides. Burke's yard has been in exceptional form this season with 140 winners sent out, and Spycatcher — who raced just yesterday and remains active — looks likely to be aimed at something big if the autumn brings the heavy ground he craves. At 8 years old, with a Class 1 win already banked this season, he is proof that some horses just need the right conditions to be genuinely dangerous.
