The most recent victory came at Listowel just this week, which means Spy arrives at this moment of the season with genuine momentum.

The details of where and how Spy wins are worth paying attention to. On normal ground conditions, Spy has won 2 of 9 races — roughly 1 in every 4 — and the same pattern holds at distances of around a mile and a furlong to a mile and two furlongs, again winning 2 from 9. These are not enormous sample sizes, but they point in the same direction: Spy is a horse with a specific sweet spot, and when conditions line up, the win rate nearly doubles compared to the overall career average. At the lower end of the class scale, that becomes even more pronounced — 2 wins from just 5 races at that level, which is 40%, or closer to 1 in every 2 and a half races. That is a genuinely strong number.

One curious note: Philip Byrnes, who rides Spy more than anyone else, has not yet partnered the horse to a win across 11 attempts together. Whether that changes going forward is one of the more interesting subplots attached to this horse. For now, Spy is a seven-year-old racing just a day after a winning run, trained by a yard in fine form, and clearly not ready to slow down.
