Trained by Brian Ellison at his yard in Norton, North Yorkshire, Space Moon at least has a strong operation behind it. Ellison's team has sent out 43 winners already this season, which speaks to a yard that knows how to get horses ready to perform. Being part of a yard firing at that level means Space Moon has every opportunity — the question is whether it can take it.
The recent form makes for uncomfortable viewing. Finishing tenth, then sixth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and third in its last six outings (reading from oldest to most recent) shows a horse that has been drifting quietly down the field more often than not, with that third-place finish the lone bright spot. Racing yesterday means it is clearly being kept busy, and in Class 4 company — the bread-and-butter level of British racing, several rungs below the top — it has had three chances and not managed to win any of them. At this level, with a yard of Ellison's quality, you'd hope to see more. Whether Space Moon develops into the horse those two placed runs hinted at remains the story still to be written.
