Silent Revolution

The first win came at Newbury in November 2021, and the quotes flying around the yard afterwards were full of excitement. The trainer at the time, Paul Nicholls, spoke about a horse that had improved over the summer and was being pointed at decent targets — a penalty race next, maybe a crack at the Kennel Gate at Ascot in December. There was genuine belief here. The second win followed at Chepstow in April 2022, and then the winning stopped. That was 50 months ago, and Silent Revolution has not troubled the judge since.

The current picture is a horse trained by Barry John Murphy out of Caerfyrddin in Carmarthenshire — a small yard that has sent out just one winner this season. Silent Revolution's last six runs read 5th, 6th, pulled up, 7th, 7th, 11th, which tells its own story. At the level where he most often runs — Class 3, one step below the top tier — he has drawn a blank in all six attempts, which suggests the horse is competing at a grade that asks questions he cannot quite answer right now.

The one consistent bright spot is his partnership with jockey Harry Cobden. Together they have won 2 of their 8 races — that's 1 in every 4, a 25% win rate that stands well above the horse's overall record. On normal ground, where he has run most often, those two wins came from 11 attempts. He raced just yesterday, so he is clearly still fit and active, which at least confirms the team believes there is still something worth running for.

Silent Revolution is the kind of horse racing is full of — talented enough to win, consistent enough to keep placing, but frustratingly unable to recapture the promise of those early days. Whether Barry John Murphy can unlock another win is the question. The ingredients — a capable jockey, a horse that handles normal ground — are there. The form, for now, says it hasn't happened yet.
