She's Crafty

Her recent form makes for interesting reading. That second place in her latest completed effort — sitting right at the top of her last six results — suggests she's coming into a better spell. Before that she was finishing mid-pack, with a fifth, a fourth, and a pair of sevenths, but the trajectory over the last couple of runs looks more promising. She raced just yesterday, so she's in the thick of it right now, and trainers don't keep running horses this regularly unless they believe there's a race to be won somewhere soon.

She typically competes at Class 6, which is the entry level of British racing — the races where younger or less experienced horses find their feet. Going 0 from 4 at that level is unusual, because Class 6 is exactly where a horse like her should theoretically pick up a win. That she hasn't managed it yet makes her an intriguing puzzle. Is she simply unlucky? Not quite producing her best on the day? Or is there a particular set of conditions she's waiting for?

She's trained by George Margarson at Newmarket, one of the heartlands of British racing and home to some of the sport's most famous yards. Margarson's team have sent out 11 winners already this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses winning. That experience and firepower behind her suggests that when the right race comes along, they'll have spotted it. She's Crafty may be still searching for her moment — but with a yard that knows how to find winners and form that's recently been on the up, that moment might not be too far away.
