Shameful is trained by Clive Cox at his Lambourn yard, one of Britain's most successful operations — Cox has sent out 48 winners already this season — but even the best trainers cannot win with every horse. Still active after racing just a day ago, Shameful remains a willing participant in the game, even if the tally of one win from six attempts (17% win rate) suggests a horse that has reached its ceiling at lower levels. That Newbury victory came 24 months back, a long time ago in racing terms, and nothing since has quite matched it. For a horse capable of occasional brilliance but more often than not finding others better on the day, the hope is simply that the next winning opportunity comes sooner than the last one did.
