Shalfa

The overall career record — 5 wins and 13 places from 37 races, so a win rate of around 1 in every 7 — might look modest at first glance, and the level Shalfa mostly competes at, Class 6, is the bottom rung of British Flat racing. But strip out Brighton and the picture changes. Add in the preference for fast, dry ground, where the win rate jumps to 3 from 10 (30%), and the sweet spot of a mile to a mile and two furlongs, where it wins 1 in every 3 races, and suddenly you have a horse with a very clear profile. Get the right track, the right ground, the right distance, and Shalfa is genuinely dangerous.

Trainer Lydia Richards has sent out four winners from her yard this season, and her most recent win with Shalfa came at Brighton on 1 September 2025 — seven months ago now, after which the horse has had a short break of 32 days following a modest run of form. The last six races read as a second place, a third, a heavy defeat in eighth, then a win, then a fourth — patchy, but there are clearly days when Shalfa shows up properly. The most recent outing ended without a placing, so there is something to prove on the comeback.

The one puzzle in the file is Neil Callan, the jockey who rides Shalfa most often — seven times together, zero wins. Whether that is coincidence or something more telling is hard to say, but it is the kind of record a trainer notices. When the Brighton fixture list comes around again, on a dry summer afternoon at a mile and a bit, Shalfa will be worth a second look regardless of who is in the saddle.
