Sea The Clouds

The career started promisingly. A first win came at Stratford-on-Avon in September 2022, and trainer James Moffatt noted at the time that the horse had strengthened up over the summer and followed that debut success by winning on its first try over hurdles at Newton Abbot, looking impressive in doing so. Moffatt also flagged early on that very wet or muddy ground might not suit — a detail worth knowing for anyone following the horse's progress.

Based at Cartmel in Cumbria, Sea The Clouds has developed a genuine affinity for the local track. Two wins from 8 races there might not sound earth-shattering, but Cartmel is a tight, quirky little circuit that not every horse takes to — the fact that Sea The Clouds keeps returning and keeps competing suggests the track genuinely suits. The most recent of those wins came in July 2025, and with the horse having raced just yesterday, it is very much in the middle of an active campaign.

Most of the work in the saddle has been done by Gavin Sheehan, and the numbers there are striking: 4 wins from just 8 races together, meaning the pair win exactly half the time they team up. That is a remarkable ratio and suggests a genuine partnership that the Moffatt yard will want to maintain. James Moffatt's team has already sent out 11 winners this season, so the yard is clearly in good form.

The bulk of Sea The Clouds' career has been spent at Class 4 level — one step below the elite — with 3 wins from 14 races at that grade. Recent form has been mixed, with finishes of seventh, fifth, and tenth in three of the last five outings, but the win at Cartmel last July is the one that matters. A horse that knows how to win, knows its best track, and is currently racing — that combination is always worth watching.
