Sea Founder

Richard Hughes trains Sea Founder from Upper Lambourn. It's a strong operation — Hughes has sent out 60 winners this season alone — so there's quality work happening in that yard. The horse seems to run best at distances between a mile and an eighth and a mile and two furlongs: it has won 2 of 11 races (roughly 1 in 5.5) over that ground, which is significantly better than its overall record. The real puzzle, though, is what happens when Sea Founder steps up in class. At the higher Class 4 level, the horse is winless from five attempts. Drop it back to easier races and you get the results — those two wins came at lower grades — but push it against stronger opposition and something goes wrong. That's the kind of detail that shapes a horse's future: it might be a genuine Class 4 or 5 horse that simply can't cut it against tougher competition, or it might be a horse that needs the right setup to perform.

Finley Marsh has ridden Sea Founder five times without a win, though form after last racing just a day ago suggests the horse is still active and in work. Whether Hughes and his team can find the right race — the right distance, the right class, the right conditions — will determine whether Sea Founder becomes a regular winner or remains exactly what it is now: a horse with a couple of nice days in April but not much else to show for eighteen attempts.
