The clearest pattern is distance. Over a mile and a quarter to a mile and two furlongs, Sea Founder has won twice from ten races — a 20 percent win rate at those trips. Remove him from that range and his record collapses. He has won both his races at this distance: his first career win at Windsor on 28 April 2025, then another at Kempton Park on 30 April 2026, four months ago. It is the kind of narrow edge that matters in racing. His trainer Richard Hughes, based at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, has sent out sixty winners this season and will be looking to steer Sea Founder back to those distances where he actually wins races.
His recent form is mixed and suggests he has drifted off the boil since that last win in April. His last six runs read: second, sixth, ninth, first, fourth, fourth — a blemished record with only one win in that stretch. He was last out just a day ago, so he is still actively racing, but that fourth-place finish suggests he has not found the form that took him to Kempton four months ago. Finley Marsh, who has ridden him five times, has yet to get Sea Founder across the line, which is a worry for the yard. There is also a notable problem at Class 4 level — the kind of race he has been competing in more often — where he has not won at all from five attempts. Sea Founder works best as a specialist, a horse that needs the right distance and the right company to be competitive. Find both, and he delivers. Get either wrong, and he struggles.
