The most intriguing wrinkle is where Sea Founder does its best work. Over distances between a mile and a furlong and a mile and two furlongs, the record reads 1 win from 8 races — 12%, or roughly 1 in every 8 — which is actually more encouraging than it sounds. It means Sea Founder is not completely out of place at those trips; it just needs everything to fall right. The Windsor win came at that kind of distance, and that race remains the clearest evidence that the horse can get competitive when conditions suit.

Recent form, though, makes for sobering reading. The last six results show a string of fourths and sevenths, with nothing better than mid-pack. That's a stretch of six races without a win, and in the grade Sea Founder usually competes at — Class 4, which is a solid mid-level tier — the horse has drawn a blank across all five attempts at that level. Getting beaten regularly at Class 4 suggests the horse needs things to go its way rather than being able to impose itself.

Jockey Finley Marsh has been the regular partner, riding Sea Founder five times without a win together. That's not necessarily anyone's fault — the horse simply hasn't been good enough on those days. What does look promising in the broader picture is the yard behind Sea Founder: Richard Hughes, training out of Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, has sent out 65 winners already this season. That's a yard in excellent form, which means Sea Founder isn't short of professional support. The horse raced just yesterday and is clearly being kept busy, so another opportunity won't be far away. Whether it can recapture that Windsor spark is the question worth watching.
