Salah Belle

The most interesting thing about Salah Belle is what happens when it races over shorter distances. Across races between five furlongs and six and a half furlongs, it has won 2 of its 9 attempts — that is a win rate of 22%, or roughly 1 in every 4 to 5 races at that trip. Compare that to its overall record and you can see the pattern clearly: get the distance right, and this horse is a different proposition. Both career wins have come at that range, the first at Dundalk in December 2023 and the second at The Curragh in June 2024 — two of Irish racing's most recognisable venues.

That Curragh win is now 24 months in the rear-view mirror, and Salah Belle has not managed to get back to the winner's enclosure since. Its last six finishes read 5-5-3-3-8-19, which means it has been placing occasionally but also drifting to the back of the field more than once. The most recent run — just yesterday — ended in 19th place, which is about as far from a podium as you can get. Whether that was an off day or the start of a dip in form, only the next few races will tell.

Jockey Robbie Colgan has partnered Salah Belle more than anyone else, riding the horse in 13 of its 18 races and landing both of its wins.
