The key detail is where Royal Playwright typically competes. Ten of its 13 races have come in Class 1 company — the very best races in Britain — and it has yet to win at that level. Finishing placed repeatedly against the elite without getting over the line might sound like a story of frustration, but it also tells you something: this is a horse good enough to be kept in that top tier, race after race, by a yard that sent out 202 winners this season alone. Andrew Balding does not run horses out of their depth for the fun of it.

When Royal Playwright has dropped into Class 2 — one rung below the summit — the results have been striking. Its first win came at Salisbury in July 2024, and then, over a year later, it landed a Class 2 at Goodwood on 24 September 2025. Goodwood is one of the most distinctive tracks in Britain, a hillside circuit that rewards a specific kind of horse, and Royal Playwright clearly has an affinity for it. Winning there in top-two-level company is a proper achievement.

Oisin Murphy, one of the best jockeys currently riding in Britain, has partnered Royal Playwright eight times — a clear sign of how seriously the team rates the horse. They have won together once from those eight rides, a win rate of around 1 in 8, with the Goodwood success their shared high point. Recent form shows a win sandwiched between placed efforts and a couple of disappointing runs, and with a race just yesterday, this is very much a horse in active campaign. Whether Royal Playwright can finally translate its Class 2 form into a breakthrough at the top level remains the outstanding question — but with Balding's operation behind it and Goodwood clearly in its corner, it would be unwise to write it off.
