The recent form figures tell a story of a horse that runs without threatening the front. Finishing fourth twice is the closest Rose Warrior has come to anything encouraging, but fourth in a Class 6 race — the lowest rung on the ladder in British racing — is not exactly a calling card. The sequence of 8-7-10-4-6-4 shows more poor runs than decent ones, and a tenth-place finish in there suggests at least one day where things went badly wrong. Class 6 is where horses compete who are finding life hard at higher levels, or who simply need a race where the bar is set low enough to get involved. Rose Warrior has had three cracks at that level and not won any of them.
What makes the situation interesting, in a quietly awkward way, is that this horse raced just yesterday — so it is clearly being kept busy and given every opportunity. Trainer Jennie Candlish, based in Basford, Staffordshire, is no novice handler. Her yard has sent out 64 winners already this season, which tells you the stable knows how to get horses winning. That context matters: this is not a struggling small operation throwing horses at the wall. Candlish clearly has the ability to place horses well and get results. The fact that Rose Warrior has not clicked yet is more likely a puzzle than a permanent verdict. Whether the horse needs a different trip, different conditions, or simply more time to mature is the question the team will be working through. For now, though, nine races and a blank scorecard means Rose Warrior has plenty left to prove.
