At four years old, Roccana Rose is coming to racing slightly later than most. That is not necessarily a concern — some horses simply take longer to develop, and a first run at four can occasionally mean a yard has been patient with a horse that needed time to fill out and mature. Whether that is the case here, only her trainer Mickey Bowen will know.
Bowen operates out of Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire — a small yard by the standards of the big racing centres, but one that has been punching its weight this season with 51 winners on the board. That is a genuinely impressive total for a stable of that size and location, and it suggests Bowen knows exactly what he is doing when he decides a horse is ready to run. The fact that he has chosen to bring Roccana Rose to the track now is worth noting in itself.
