Red Rifle

That debut back in 2025 was something of a disaster, and trainer Grant Tuer is candid about why. Red Rifle arrived at Ripon completely wound up — far keener than anyone at the yard had hoped — and was slowly away, putting him immediately on the back foot in a competitive £30,000 race. It was the kind of debut that teaches you more than it rewards you: the horse had done everything right at home, jumped well, ticked every box, but the racecourse was a different matter entirely. That experience, painful as it was, appears to have been useful. The 11 buried in his recent form is almost certainly from that difficult early period; the improvement since is real.

The Catterick win was the moment Red Rifle showed what he can do when things fall into place. Jockey Oliver Stammers has been on board for 6 of his 9 races and was aboard for that victory — together they win at 17%, or roughly 1 in every 6 races, which is a decent return and suggests a genuine partnership has developed. Trainer Grant Tuer, based at Birkby in North Yorkshire, has sent out 29 winners already this season, so this is a yard in good form and clearly not short of confidence.

At three years old and still learning the game, Red Rifle raced just yesterday and remains very much in the thick of his season. Tuer believes a mile is his true distance, and with a trainer who knows his horse and a regular jockey he responds to, the building blocks are there. The Catterick win was five weeks ago — close enough that the confidence from it should still be fresh. A horse that improves with experience and has a trainer willing to be patient with him is one worth following.
