A win rate of roughly 1 in every 10 races across a long career puts Rain Cap firmly at the bread-and-butter end of the sport — Class 6 races, the entry level of British racing, account for all 6 of its wins from 53 starts at that level. But within those modest numbers there is a genuine quirk worth noticing: Catterick Bridge. Rain Cap has won 4 of its 25 races there, which works out at 1 win in every 6 attempts at the track. For context, the horse wins roughly 1 in every 10 races everywhere else. Something about that tight, undulating North Yorkshire circuit suits it, and four wins at the same track is not coincidence — it is a pattern.

The partnership with jockey Sean Kirrane is another thread worth pulling. In 27 races together, Kirrane has ridden Rain Cap to 5 of its 6 career wins — a win rate of 19%, or nearly 1 in every 5 rides. That is almost double the horse's overall win rate, which tells you the combination works. Kirrane clearly understands what Rain Cap needs, and trainer John David Riches, based in Pilling, Lancashire, has sent out 5 winners already this season, so the yard is in decent nick.

Rain Cap does its best work over the shorter distances — between 5 furlongs and 6 and a half furlongs — where it has won 5 of its 31 races at those trips, a win rate of 16%. That is meaningfully better than its overall record and suggests it wants to race sharp and fast rather than grind it out over longer distances.

The most recent win came at Pontefract in July 2025, now a year ago, and the last six runs have produced nothing better than a second place. Recent form reads 5th, 4th, 7th, 3rd, 2nd, 11th — slightly ragged, though it raced just yesterday, so it remains very much in training and in the mix. At nine, Rain Cap is no youngster, but horses like this can find a moment from nowhere, especially if Catterick comes around again.
