Qazaq

All three of those wins came on all-weather tracks, and trainer Iain Jardine is open about the fact that Qazaq has never raced on turf. That is genuinely unusual for a horse this far into its career, and it makes the next chapter interesting. Jardine, who operates out of Carrutherstown in Dumfries and Galloway and has sent out 57 winners already this season — a yard clearly in fine form — believes Qazaq is built for it. His view is that a stiff seven-furlong turf trip should suit the horse, and that he will handle most ground conditions from fast and dry to soft underfoot.

The last win came at Southwell in November 2024, which is now over six months ago, and Qazaq has not troubled the judge in six races since. The most recent of those came just yesterday, with a fifth-place finish. Jardine's explanation is straightforward: the horse was not quite himself around New Year, was given a proper break to recover, and has been working well since. Sometimes the most honest thing a trainer can say is "he wasn't right, we gave him time." It does not guarantee anything, but it at least makes sense of a run of form that could otherwise look like decline.

The yard typically pitches Qazaq at Class 4 level, which sits comfortably in the mid-tier of British racing, and he has won 1 of his 5 races there — 20%, or 1 in 5, which is a perfectly respectable return at that grade. He is not a big-occasion horse chasing glory at the top table, but at his level, on his day and on the right surface, he is capable. Whether turf finally unlocks something new in him, or simply confirms that the all-weather is where he belongs, is a question his next few races should answer.
