Promethean

The recent form makes uncomfortable reading. Finishing third is the best it has managed across the last six races, with a string of seventh, eighth, and eleventh-place finishes filling out the picture. Third place suggests the horse is competitive enough to get into a race, but something — fitness, confidence, the right conditions, a little luck — has consistently stopped it from kicking on when it matters. Racing at Class 4, which is a solid but unspectacular level of competition, Promethean has drawn a blank in all ten races at that grade. Winning zero from ten at your natural level is a tough stat to look past.

What works in Promethean's favour is who has the horse in training. Sam England's yard in Guiseley, West Yorkshire, has sent out 53 winners this season — that is a yard in seriously good form, one that clearly knows how to get horses ready to win races. England will have seen horses take time to find their feet before, and the fact that Promethean is still in active training and being campaigned regularly suggests the team has not given up on finding the right opportunity. When a busy, successful yard keeps running a horse that has not won, it usually means they believe the win is coming. Whether Promethean can finally deliver on that faith is the question worth watching.
