Trained by Ed Walker at Upper Lambourn, Popmaster operates in good company. Walker's yard has sent out 75 winners this season alone, which is a serious operation, and Popmaster has repaid that faith on a couple of memorable occasions. The horse's first career win came at Ascot in July 2023 — already a prestigious venue — but the real highlight arrived just two months later at Newbury, where Popmaster won a Class 1 race. To put that in context, Class 1 means the very top tier of British racing. Most horses never get close to that level, and Popmaster not only got there but won. That's the kind of result that defines a career.
What makes this eight-year-old genuinely puzzling is what happened either side of that peak. The bulk of Popmaster's races — 31 of them — have come at Class 2 level, one rung below the elite, and the horse has won precisely none of them. Zero wins from 31 races at that grade is a striking number, and it raises an odd question: how does a horse win at the very top but struggle consistently at the level just below it? It suggests Popmaster is something of a specialist — perhaps needing a specific combination of conditions, distance, and occasion to produce its best.
The recent form is encouraging, though. Last month Popmaster won at Kempton Park, and the three runs before that produced a first, a second, and a third — a purple patch by any standard. Regular partner Tom Marquand has ridden the horse in 10 races together and has one win to show for it, but given Popmaster's overall numbers, 1 win from 10 together is actually right on pace. With the horse racing just yesterday and clearly in form, it's an interesting moment to be watching. At eight years old, Popmaster isn't building toward something — it's already lived its headline moment. But it's still running, still placing, and on the right day with rain in the forecast, still capable of turning heads.
