The most recent run, just yesterday, produced a fourth-place finish — and to be fair, that is genuinely the most encouraging result on the card. Fourth is not a win, but it is a step forward from a horse that had been drifting toward the back of the pack in its previous outings. Whether that signals real improvement or just a smaller, easier field is the question Conrad Allen and his team at Newmarket will be sitting with this morning.
Allen's yard has been in decent form this season — 12 winners sent out is a solid return, and Newmarket is one of the great training centres in British racing, home to some of the sharpest operations in the country. The hope will be that Poetic Grace is simply a late learner, the kind of horse that needs time and experience before the penny drops. At three, there is still time. But four races without troubling the judge, and a recent run that placed nineteenth, means patience is being tested. The next few outings will say a great deal about whether this horse has a future to look forward to.
