Play By The Rules

The recent form makes for tough reading. Five fifth-place finishes in a row — the last six runs have produced a solitary fourth place among a string of fifths. That is not a horse on the cusp of a breakthrough; it is a horse that tends to find a handful of rivals better than it on the day, consistently. A career win rate of 5% means it wins roughly 1 in every 20 races, which over 21 outings has produced exactly what the maths would predict: one winner.

Most of its racing has come at Class 5 level, which is the entry-level tier of British racing — the kind of contests designed to give horses like this a fighting chance. Even there, it has won just 1 from 9 races, or about 1 in every 9 at that level. It is not being outclassed by better horses; it is simply finding it hard to win at any level. David Noonan has been the regular jockey, riding it eight times for that single win together — a win rate of 12%, which is actually the horse's best return with any partner, for whatever that is worth.

The yard behind it is Adam Nicol's operation, based up in Seahouses on the Northumberland coast — about as far north as British racing gets. Nicol has sent out 24 winners this season, so the stable is clearly capable of producing results. Play By The Rules, though, raced just yesterday and remains active, which at least speaks to a horse that stays sound and keeps turning up. Sometimes that kind of durability is its own quiet achievement — even if the winner's enclosure has been a very long time coming.
