Picaro

What Picaro does have going for it is the yard behind it. Trained by James Owen out of Newmarket — the heartland of British flat racing — the horse is operating in one of the sport's most productive environments. Owen's yard has sent out 205 winners this season alone, which is a remarkable number and a sign of a genuinely high-functioning operation. Being trained by someone with that kind of firepower means Picaro has access to serious expertise, quality preparation, and the kind of patient management that can turn a slow starter into a winner. Not every horse clicks straight away, and in a yard churning out winners at that rate, there is clearly no shortage of know-how to draw on.

At three years old, Picaro is still a young horse learning its trade. The fact that it keeps showing up in the top half of the field — those three fourth-place finishes in particular — suggests it is not hopelessly out of its depth, just not yet good enough to close the deal. Whether that changes soon is the question, but with an active yard and a horse that raced as recently as yesterday, the answer should not be too long in coming.
