The journey to that Newbury win began at Redcar in April 2022, a modest start on a modest track. He followed it with a Class 2 success at York in August 2022 — York being one of the most respected venues in British racing — and from there the team, led by Scott, has consistently pitched him at the very best company. The trainer's own words after Newbury tell you plenty: the plan was always the Bahrain International, one of the sport's major international occasions, and Phantom Flight earned his place there on merit. Scott noted that the horse came to him in excellent shape and that the ambition was there from the start to find something genuinely special.

In his twelve races alongside jockey P J McDonald, Phantom Flight has won 3 of them — a 25% win rate, or 3 from every 12 — which is a productive partnership by any measure. What is harder to explain away is the broader Class 1 record: just 1 win from 13 races at that level, an 8% hit rate. That tells you how fiercely competitive the top tier is, and how rare that Newbury victory really was.

His last win came at Dundalk in September 2025, now nine months ago, and his most recent six runs read 10-6-1-7-3-6 — a first, a third, but also some disappointing finishes. George Scott's yard has been in strong form this season, sending out 52 winners, so the platform is there. Whether Phantom Flight, now in the later years of his career, can recapture the form that took him to the very top of the sport remains the interesting question.
