The pattern becomes clearer when you look at the ground. On normal, standard conditions, Passengerontheship wins roughly 45 per cent of the time — 5 wins from 11 races — which is the kind of rate that keeps a horse in work and in the reckoning. Move him onto faster, drier ground or softer, wetter going and he falls away. His trainer Sam England, based in Guiseley, West Yorkshire, thinks the horse has been poorly placed: he has been beaten by horses that went on to win big races, including one who finished runner-up at an Irish festival, suggesting Passengerontheship has occasionally mixed with better company than he should. England believes the horse has enough ability to win races, stays well over distance, and jumps cleanly — just not big enough to be physically impressive, but efficient enough to do the job.

The puzzle is Jonathan England, who rides him regularly: they have had ten races together with no wins, which is a pattern hard to ignore. Elsewhere, though, Passengerontheship has won races, so something about that partnership is not clicking. What makes him genuinely interesting is his Hexham record. Find a horse that dominates one track the way this one does, and you have found something worth watching — even if the rest of his form is ordinary.
