Our Guy

The horse clearly suits shorter distances. Over five to six and a half furlongs, he has won one from three races—a 33% win rate that is genuinely impressive compared to his overall numbers. That tells you the track and the trip matter hugely to him. The problem is that five months have passed since his last win, and his recent form reads like a lottery: tenth, ninth, a race unspecified, first, fifth, sixth across his last six outings. There is inconsistency there, the kind that makes it hard to back him with confidence. But he was last out just a day ago, so he is clearly being run regularly by Denis Coakley's yard at West Ilsley, which has sent out ten winners this season and knows what it is doing.

What makes Our Guy worth a second look is not what he has already done, but where his strengths lie. If his the yard can find him another race over his preferred distance—five to six and a half furlongs—he has shown he can win. His form is patchy enough that a return to Windsor, the track where he broke his duck, would not be a wild gamble. For now, he is a horse in progress, one who needs the right conditions to show his best, but who has at least proved he can get the job done.
