Ormolulu

The six-year-old is trained by Gemma Tutty at a yard tucked away in Osmotherley in North Yorkshire, and the stable has been in good form this season — 19 winners sent out already. Ormolulu's regular partner in the saddle is jockey Saffie Osborne, who has been aboard for 13 of her races and picked up 2 of those wins together, a record that mirrors the horse's overall win rate of roughly 1 in every 6 or 7 races across 39 career starts. That overall number — 6 wins and 14 places from 39 races — tells the story of a horse that earns its keep without setting the world on fire away from its favourite venue.

What makes this particularly interesting is what happened over the winter just gone. Ormolulu won four times at Southwell between autumn and February, a purple patch that suggests she thrives when conditions and routine suit her. Tutty has spoken about how the horse needs a strong early pace to aim at, which is very specific knowledge — she is not just a track specialist, she is a race-type specialist too, ideally over six furlongs with horses in front of her to chase down. She can handle seven furlongs, but six is where she clicks.

She has not won in her last 6 races, with her most recent victory coming at Southwell in February 2025, now 14 months ago. But Tutty is not hiding her — the plan, as of April, was to target some better prize-money races and possibly races that carry black type, which is a formal mark of prestige that follows a horse's name forever once earned. It is a significant step up from the Class 4 races she has mostly competed in, where she has won just 2 from 16. Tutty's belief is that there is still more to come on the right day. Given what this horse has already done at one particular track in the right conditions, that is not an idle claim.
