Goodwood is one of British racing's most cherished venues, a course carved into the Sussex Downs that punishes horses who are not moving well. Winning there is not a fluke. And with the horse having raced as recently as yesterday, this is not a profile about past glories — this is a horse in the middle of something.

Behind the scenes, the operation is about as reassuring as it gets. William Haggas trains out of Newmarket in Suffolk, one of the sport's most respected yards, and this season alone his team has sent out 170 winners. That is not a stable where horses drift along without a plan — Haggas runs a tight, ambitious ship. When he decides a horse is ready to win, it usually is.

The partnership with jockey Tom Marquand adds another layer of confidence. The two have teamed up five times, and Marquand has ridden Orionis to 3 of those wins — a 60% win rate together, which is extraordinary. Three wins from five rides is the kind of number that makes a trainer keep picking up the phone to the same jockey. They clearly understand each other.

Orionis broke its duck at Ripon in June 2025, and has not looked back since. The horse tends to compete at Class 5 level, winning 1 from 3 at that grade (roughly one in every three races), but the overall record suggests it is more than capable of making its mark wherever it lines up. Right now, it looks like a horse at the top of its game.
