Orchard Keeper

The horse's most recent victory came at Goodwood on 13 June 2025, but that was 16 months ago. Since then, Orchard Keeper has run six times without another win, though it has finished fourth twice and fifth twice, showing it remains competitive without quite getting over the line. This inability to convert form into victories is the defining story of its career: capable enough to run well, yet somehow always a step short.

There are hints of where the horse performs best. Over distances between a mile and three furlongs and a mile and four furlongs—the middle-distance ground Orchard Keeper clearly prefers—it has won one of four races, a 25% win rate that stands out against its overall 12% win rate across all distances. Similarly, in Class 4 races, it has won once in five attempts, 20%, suggesting it runs better when facing slightly less formidable opposition.

Jack Mitchell, its most regular jockey, has ridden the horse seven times and won twice together—a 29% win rate—which is noticeably better than its overall record. This partnership works, even if opportunities have dried up in recent months. Orchard Keeper is trained by Roger Varian at Newmarket, a yard that sent out 87 winners this season alone, so the infrastructure for improvement is certainly in place. The challenge now is whether the horse can find another win before the gaps between victories stretch even longer.
