On The Bubble

Both wins came in the spring and early summer of 2024, first at Redcar in May and then at Hexham in June — and crucially, both came on wet or muddy ground. In those conditions, On The Bubble has won 2 from 6 races, which is a 33% win rate. That means on a soggy day it wins roughly 1 in every 3 races it enters, compared to almost nothing on faster ground. For a horse that otherwise struggles to get its head in front, that is a significant difference. Wet weather is not just a preference — it looks more like a requirement.

The other thing worth noting is that On The Bubble seems to find its best form over longer distances, at two miles and beyond. It has won 1 from 4 races at those trips, a 25% win rate, which again tells a different story than the overall numbers suggest. Most of its racing, though, has come in Class 6 company — the lowest tier of races in Britain — where it has managed just 1 win from 23 attempts, or roughly 1 in every 23 races. That is a tough record at the easiest level, and it is an honest reflection of where this horse sits in the pecking order.

There are two things to factor in before the next run. First, On The Bubble has not won in its last six races, with recent finishes reading 6-4-5-7-3-2 — consistent enough to suggest it is competitive without being able to get over the line. Second, it is returning from a break of around five months, which adds a layer of uncertainty. Gary Rutherford's yard, based in Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders, has sent out six winners this season, so the team is in working order. Regular partner Greg Fairley has yet to win in seven rides together, which is something to bear in mind. The right day for On The Bubble looks specific: a wet afternoon, a long trip, and a clear run. When those pieces align, it is a different horse entirely.
