Ocean Heights

The clearest pattern is Ocean Heights' love of fast, dry ground. On firm turf, he wins roughly 3 times in every 10 races, which is significantly better than his overall record. He also has a sweet spot in trip: races between one mile three furlongs and one mile four furlongs suit him, where he has won 4 of his last 18 outings. Trainer David Pipe, whose Somerset yard has sent out 37 winners this season alone, knows where to place him. The evidence suggests Pipe finds the right conditions and the right race level—Class 4 contests, mostly—to give Ocean Heights his best chance.

His jockey Jack Dace, who has ridden him 12 times, has a slightly better record aboard him than the horse manages overall, winning twice from their partnership. That 17 per cent rate hints at a useful working relationship. Ocean Heights only recently found the winner's circle, taking his first win in December 2023 at Kempton Park, then slowly accumulating victories over nearly three years. He was last in the winner's enclosure as recently as last week, winning at Newton Abbot on 7 September—a race run just a day ago from his most recent outing. That tells you he is actively campaigned and still competitive.

Form dips occasionally—his last six races show nothing better than a second place—but for a nine-year-old of his level, Ocean Heights remains the kind of horse that will find a winner when conditions and opposition align. He is a stayer in every sense: durable, honest, and still capable of surprising a betting ring when the ground is firm and the race is suited to his style.
