The recent form makes for slightly mixed reading. A second and a third in its earlier runs hinted at a horse on the way up, but since then Oberon Hill has finished sixth, pulled up or was otherwise absent in one run, then seventh, and most recently eleventh — a sequence that points in the wrong direction. Racing yesterday, this is a horse very much in the thick of its campaign right now, and Jim and Suzi Best's team at Lewes in East Sussex will be working to understand what it needs to start converting those near-misses into something more meaningful.
The Best yard has been in decent form this season, sending out 13 winners, so the infrastructure and knowhow is there. Oberon Hill has done most of its racing at Class 5, the entry level of the sport, and has yet to trouble the scorer in any of those four attempts at that grade. For context, Class 5 is where horses tend to find their feet — it is the level where you would expect a horse with genuine potential to eventually break through. The fact that it has not yet done so is not a crisis, but the clock is ticking, and with no wins from eight races, patience from everyone involved is being tested. Whether a change of tactics, different ground conditions, or simply more experience can unlock something better remains to be seen.
