Oasis Sunrise

That Bath victory is the obvious centrepiece of what Oasis Sunrise has achieved. It came at a distance of around a mile to a mile and a quarter, which is the range where this horse has always looked most at home — winning 1 from 11 races at those distances, or roughly 1 in every 11 attempts. That sounds modest, but it does at least suggest the horse knows where its best chance lies. Most of its racing has come at Class 6, which is the entry-level tier of British racing, and even there the record reads 1 win from 14 races. It hasn't been dominating the bottom rung of the ladder; it's been scraping along it.

The jockey partnership with Benoit De La Sayette hasn't clicked either — five rides together and no wins to show for it. That's not necessarily a damning verdict on either horse or rider, but it's worth noting that the one race Oasis Sunrise did win didn't come with De La Sayette in the saddle. Meanwhile, trainer Grace Harris has had a productive season at her Shirenewton yard in Gwent, sending out 27 winners, which shows the operation knows how to prepare a winner. The question is whether Oasis Sunrise can become one of them again.

Now returning from a three-month break — its last race was 100 days ago — the horse arrives at whatever comes next with a recent run of form that reads sixth, seventh, third, second, sixth in the races before that layoff. There's a glimpse of something in that third and second, but it faded away before the break. Whether the time off has refreshed it or simply delayed more of the same, only racing will tell. Oasis Sunrise has shown it can win. It just hasn't shown it very often.
